The process used for the art for Monkey For Sale is etching and Chine Colle. Etching is a method of printmaking where the line art is applied to a metal place which is bitten in acid. In this case I worked on copper plates and bit them in ferric chloride. Where there are marks and intrusions in the plate is where the ink is rubbed in. A piece of damp paper is placed over the plate which is put through a printing press at carefuly-calibrated pressure.
The Chine Colle is collage which is embedded into the print. In this case I painted the separate images and areas of color onto mulberry paper. They were then embedded into the plate between the ink and a painted background.
